The majestic shadow of the Augustines, the Dominicans and the Franciscans today offer the only opportunity to admire the architecture of these
16th. Century buildings decorated with the sensitivity and the artwork of indigenous hands whose style can be detected throughout Morelos and the ex Convent Route.
There are 3 different ex Convent routes, as follows:
- The Tepoztlán route that includes convents of Cuernavaca, Tepotzlán, Tlayacapan,
Tlalnepantla, Oaxtepec, Atlatlahucan and Totolapan
- The Volcán Route that includes the Convents of Yecapixtla, Ocuituco, Tetela del Volcán and Zacualpan de Amilpas.
- The Tierra Caliente Route that includes the Convents of Cuautla, Tlaltizapan, Tlaquiltenango and Jojutla
11 of these convents were named a Cultural Heritage site by Unesco in 1994. It's worth it to visit at least the Convents of the above mentioned
routes. The most common route includes following convents:
- Tepotzlán: Ex Convent of the Nativity. XVI century Dominican origin construction
- Yecapixtla: Augustinian Convent of Saint John Baptist, built in 1535
Ocuituco: Ex Convent of Santiago Apostle, was the first Augustinian in Morelos (1533)
Tetela del Volcán: Ex Convent of the Saint John Baptist finished in 1581
Hueyapan: Ex Convent of Saint Domingo de Guzman built in 1570
Zacualpan: Ex Convent of the Conception Augustinian construction of the XVI century.
